Bat Group Research
I served as a committee member for the Leicestershire & Rutland Bat Group from 2016 to 2020.
During this time, I gained a lot of survey experience. My work with this group included:
– swarming surveys
– bat walks
– bat box checks
– hibernation surveys
– waterways surveys (Daubenton’s bats)
Bat research
I set up a static bat detector and left it in situ for two months (February-April). This detector unit was equipped with a low power directional microphone, suited to extended periods of passive monitoring, and capable of recording frequencies up to 250kHz.
I recorded calls from five bat species during this period (P. pipistrellus, P. pygmaeus, P. nathusii, N. noctula, and Myotis sp). I found that environmental factors significantly influenced bat activity, including moon illumination, wind speed, and temperature.
